Basketball league, tournament coming to COM – Daily News

Published January 11, 2012

TEXAS CITY — The NBA is back in action, and college basketball matchups are more exciting than ever.

Next month, basketball fever will come to College of the Mainland with the inaugural 18-and-older adult basketball league and a 45-and-older 3-on-3 basketball tournament, which are both open to the public.

COM’s Run and Gun Adult Basketball League will begin Feb. 13 at the COM gym. Game days, times and duration will be based on the number of teams in the league.

“We want to provide a place for everybody to come and compete,” said Michael Richardson, COM’s coordinator for membership and community recreation. “It’s a nice, healthy, competitive league for everybody.”

Registration, which begins Jan. 23, is $375 for teams and $55 for individuals. Those without a team will be placed with other players to form a team.

The 3-on-3 tournament runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 4.

Registration, which includes the team roster, runs through Feb. 1, and the cost is $150 per team. Teams may have three or four players on the roster.

For information on the league or the tournament, contact Richardson, 409-933-8190 or mrichardson6(at)com.edu.

Fifth annual Jimmy Myers 3-on-3 hoop tournament on tap for next month

Jimmy Myers gave tirelessly to the Jewish Community Center of the North Shore for 25 years. After the beloved director of the JCC gym died five years ago, his friends wanted to do something in his memory.

So on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 16), the JCC will honor Myers by hosting the fifth annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament that’s named for him.

Games will be played all day for players in four divisions: grades 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 and adults. The tournament is co-ed and will feature three players on a team, which can be mixed, all-male or all-female. The $30 fee per team includes T-shirts to all the participants.

The event has grown each year in popularity. Andrew Dalton, the recreation director for aquatic and gym programs at the JCC, hopes it will be even bigger and better in 2012. He’s working closely with Mike Leykin, who was coached by Myers when he was growing up, to make sure everything goes smoothly.

“For 25 years Jimmy was a mentor who really enjoyed working with both kids and adults,” said Dalton. “He ran our youth and adult basketball leagues; just about anything that went on inside the gym was his responsibility.

“We either use NBA or college teams for the names of our men’s teams, but Jimmy would always make up some funny names. Sometimes players didn’t like the names he picked for their team, but everybody loved Jimmy.

“He wanted every team to be competitive with a chance to win the championship,” added Dalton. “For the most part people liked that because it was more fun to play knowing there was always a chance to win. He was all about getting everybody involved as much as possible.”

Myers had his hand in everything athletically at the JCC and he was always available. He coached and refereed games along with organizing the various leagues.

“He worked hard seven days a week,” said Dalton. “Jimmy dedicated his life to our sports programs and was a very popular guy. He was never big on technology, but preferred to make phone calls. He was happiest when he was on the court reffing games or working with the coaches.

“He mentored an awful lot of parents on how to be good coaches, and many of them are still actively involved. Over the years he worked with thousands of youngsters teaching them sportsmanship. That’s his legacy.”

The JCC of the North Shore has a Jimmy Myers Basketball League that runs on the principles of good sportsmanship that he always stressed.

Dalton said this year he is hoping to attract some new teams to compete in the 3-on-3 tournament. Anyone interested in learning more about it can go to the website (JCCNS.org) and follow the link to register, or email Dalton at adalton@JCCNS.com.
