Sunday will bring the championship races for the college league that has raced on the course twice previously this spring. Volunteers, who need not know anything about rowing, are sought for jobs ranging from directing parking at the Pope’s Island Marina launch area to driving launches for race officials to providing information about New Bedford to out-of-town spectators at the finish line. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Anne at New Bedford Community Rowing at 508-717-4013 or anne@newbedfordcommunityrowing.org.

McDivitt, Carlson honored by Curbstone Coaches

BOARDMAN – Practicing for basketball is a must if you hope to find your way in the starting rotation.

Practicing for life, it takes more than good shooting and dribbling skills.

Lakeview High School senior Zach McDivitt and Lowellville High School senior Emily Carlson are starting to realize that successful balance.

Sunday, the two were recognized at The Georgetown for not only their athletic talents, but their academics and other activities in and out of their respective high schools that make them well-rounded people.

Each were presented with the Byrd Giampetro Trophy, a bronze basketball trophy, and a $1,000 scholarship as the Curbstone Coaches Student-Athlete of the Year during the organization’s basketball recognition banquet that honored boys and girls from the All-American Conference, Inter-Tri County League and those on the Northeast Inland District Team.

The requirements for the scholarship include a minimum 2.5 GPA and a balance between their work on and off the court.

“A lot is organization,” said McDivitt, who has a 3.83 GPA. “My parents help me a lot. They always encourage me to do that stuff. I don’t get a lot of sleep.”

Carlson, who has a 4.0 GPA, said she is meticulous about her day.

“It’s a lot of time management, a lot of balancing, a lot of time planning out my day ahead of time, thinking when I’m going to fit in my studies and go to practice,” she said. “It’s a lot of thinking, but my parents help me a lot to get through it.”

In addition to being an all-state basketball selection and being a standout in track and cross country, she plays flute in Lowellville’s array of bands, is a cheerleader and even was the founding director of the Ella Rose Solak Memorial Fundraiser — Have a Heart 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

That said, Carlson, who will go to Ohio Northern this fall and be part of the pharmacy program and may play basketball there, needs time to unwind as well.

“I have a couple of horses out in my backyard,” she said. “Whenever I feel pressure or get stressed out, I just go back there and talk to them. It kind of relieves stress, but I play the piano too. That helps me get through a lot of things.”

McDivitt, on the other hand, did more than play tennis, which he’ll play while he majors in Allied Health at Otterbein University, and excel at basketball. He did many community service projects around the Cortland area.

However, succeeding in basketball wasn’t easy for McDivitt. It took many countless hours of practice over the summer on his own, the kind of effort McDivitt likes to put into most of his endeavors.

“I kind of had a rough start to my basketball season last year and I didn’t want that to happen again,” he said.
