JamQuest Hoops tourney April 27

Tuesday, 17 April 2012 14:20

The Ridgefield Boys and Girls Club will host the Fifth Annual JamQuest Hoops 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament on Friday, April 27. The event is used to raise awareness and money for children facing poverty and depravation in Kenya.

There will be three age divisions, with each featuring boys and girls brackets. The 5th-8th grade division will play from 6 to 7:30, the 9th-12th grade division from 8 to 9:30, and the 18-over division from 10 to 11.

The cost is $20 per player, and teams can register via email at

Nick Shoff, an RHS senior varsity basketball player, began JamQuest Hoops as a service project in the eighth grade with the support of East Ridge Middle School social studies teacher Maureen Tyra. Recently, NBA Global Ambassador Dikembe Mutombo and San Diego Chargers All-Pro quarterback Philip Rivers each personally contacted Shoff to offer their recognition and support.

The JamQuest Executive Team is comprised of RHS senior student athletes, including Ryan Callanan, Allie Schiffer, John Turner, Nicole Rioseco, Sarah Kadagian, Grayson Wiley, and Shoff. In March they talked to several hundred students at both East Ridge and Scotts Ridge in a program entitled Everyone Can Be Great Because Everyone Can Serve.

Over the last four years, more than $18,000 has been raised through donations and entry fees, and more than 500 participants have played in the tournament. For the third consecutive year, Dr. Mark Ottenweller, an international crisis medical worker and global AIDS coordinator for HOPE worldwide, will be speaking at the event.

Shooting Stars – Las Cruces Sun

Click photo to enlargeBlue skies and long-range shooting accuracy returned Sunday and the Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament crowned champions in 35 brackets as the event concluded at the Field of Dreams.

A cool, sunny and breezy finale was a welcome sight to estimated 2,000 players lacing up their shoes for the annual event. The Gus Macker opened Saturday, accompanied by high winds, which whipped up dust and shrouded the tournament in a cloud of brown – not exactly ideal conditions for any shooters out there.

Sunday’s 63-degree high and comparatively light winds proved more friendly.

Stopping in Las Cruces since 1995, the Gus Macker typically benefits local nonprofit organizations, and this year was no different.

The Las Cruces Boys and Girls Club and Casa de Peregrinoswere the two organizations benefitting from proceeds of the tournament.

Las Cruces was the first stop on the Gus Macker’s 2012 schedule, according to the organization’s website. It will run tournaments in three other New Mexico cities – Alamogordo, Artesia and Hobbs – through the spring and summer.

Gus Macker returns to Las Cruces this weekend; 490 teams scheduled to take part – Las Cruces Sun

Click photo to enlargeLAS CRUCES – The 2012 Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament is slated for Saturday and Sunday in the east parking lot of the Field of Dreams.

Thousands of players and their friends and families – from all across southern New Mexico – will descend on the 35 courts for games beginning at 8
a.m. Saturday. The 490 four-player teams, placed on the appropriate court by gender, age, experience and height, will play 3-on-3 games to 15 points.

Tournament director Ken Hoeksema said for the second year in a row, sanctioned referees will manage each court.

“We have to pay a little bit more for that, but we want to make the experience for the participants on the court a better one,” Hoeksema said.

Trophies will be awarded to the top team on each court. The “Toilet Bowl” trophy will go to the best worst team on each court.

Player registration is from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and continues at 7 a.m. Saturday. Among the festivities Friday is the third annual media game, pitting the Las Cruces Sun-News against Radio of Las Cruces at 6 p.m. at the Top Men’s Court. Jack Nixon, the Voice of the Aggies, will call the action.

Teams paid $136 to participate in the outdoors tournament, which guarantees – weather cooperating – three games and a T-shirt. According to weather.com, Saturday will be windy and sunny and Sunday will be partly cloudy. Highs on both days are expected to be in the upper 60s.

An underlying theme of the tournament, which begin in Las Cruces in 1995,

is to help nonprofit organizations in Las Cruces. This year, the Las Cruces
Boys and Girls Club and Casa de Peregrinos will be the two organizations that will benefit from the proceeds of the tournament.

The mission of the Boys and Girls Club of Las Cruces is to enable all young people, especially those who need it most, to reach their full potential as
productive, caring and responsible citizens. The club offers after-school and summer programs to more than 400 children from 6 to 18.

Casa de Peregrinos is a nonprofit and nondenominational emergency food program that provides free supplemental groceries to individuals and
families at risk of hunger in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County. The food bank serves as a safety link for those unable to purchase nutritious food due to an emergency or unforeseen personal crisis.

“It’s a good partnership to have,” Hoeksema said. “It’s important for a lot of nonprofits to collaborate, and it’s helpful to stress we’re trying to be
collaborative.”

To enhance the family-oriented experience at the Gus Macker tournament, a carnival with kiddie rides will be available this year.

For information, call (575) 635-1562 or visit macker.com for rules, brackets and more.

ValleyFest 2012 is canceled

ValleyFest, an Arkansas River Valley annual tradition for 22 years, has been canceled for 2012, but some of the events associated with the festival will continue on their own.

“We will be hosting an event at the Boys and Girls Club to recognize our sponsors,” Boys and Girls Club of the Arkansas River Valley executive director Cathy Andrasik said about having an event this year. “We have also spoken with representatives of Pope County Fair Grounds with positive reception.”

Laurie Driver, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District spokesperson, said Andrasik was notified before last year’s event that Old Post Park would not be an option for this year.

“The Corps felt ValleyFest had outgrown the infrastructure of Old Post Park,” Driver said. “We (Corps) were under the impression that the event would continue to grow and that the park could not accommodate an event of that size.”

Driver said the Corps told Andrasik it would work with the Boys and Girls Club to host portions of the event at the park, and as of Friday had not received notification from the club requesting use of the facility this year.

“They did meet with us and we gave them an operational procedure, and they told us we wouldn’t be able to have the event there the following year,” Andrasik said. “At that point we thought if we work well with them, we would still be able to have it.”

Andrasik said the Corps of Engineers suggested she fill out a different form requesting use of the facility to host a fundraiser for a nonprofit. She did, but said a representative of the Corps told them during last year’s wrap up meeting the event would need to relocate.

“We plan to continue events that were previously held during ValleyFest — such as our 5K run/walk, pickleball tournament, tennis tournament, disc golf tournament, Tour De Valley [in memory of Sam Avery] and 3 on 3 basketball tournament,” Andrasik said. “We won’t begin planning until June. We did meet with the chairman of each event, and everyone is on board to run those events.”

Last year event organizers added more carnival rides, a disc golf tournament and brought in a temporary stage for country singer Travis Tritt.

Usual events at the festival included a 3-on-3 basketball, softball, “River Valley Idol” competition, tennis, basketball, a 5K run, a fishing derby, Tour De Valley bicycle race, pickle ball, a car show, beach volleyball, horseshoes, a slam-dunk contest and concessions.

ValleyFest is the biggest fundraiser for the Boys and Girl’s Club and was hosted at Old Post Park all of its past 22 years.

It’s Friday: ‘Hoops For Hope’ to battle cancer

Lake Superior State University students, R.J. Neal and Summers Captain joined forces to host the second annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise funds for two worthy charities — the Boys and Girls Club and the National Breast Cancer Society.

The “Hoops For Hope” 3-on-3 tournament will raise funds through donations by the participants and will promote an active, healthy lifestyle. On Saturday April 8, Hoops For Hope will begin in the Student Activity Center (SAC) at LSSU.

Co-organizer Neal said the tournament is open to three-person teams — in both boys and girls divisions — from 9 year olds through adults.

“We will divide the teams by age group,” Neal said. “But within the age groups we will also separate the teams by experience. This will allow each team to play more games and to compete on their skill level.

“We will have the event indoors at the SAC. That will give us 6 courts for games — if we need more we’ll use the main gym too. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. and will finish around 4 p.m.”

In April, 2011 the first Hoops For Hope had 41 teams register and the event raise over $3,500 for the worthy charities.

When asked how doubling the numbers of teams would impact the event, Neal said with a huge smile, “The more the merrier!”

The charity event will follow a Gus Macker type format for the games, rules and brackets, Neal said.

If a division has four teams, they will play a round robin format. If the division has five or more teams it will run as a double-elimination tournament. The tournament will also strengthen the local teams and give players practice and experience, Neal added.

There is no set entry fee for the basketball event, said Neal. “This is a fun event and a fund raiser for two very worthy charities — the Boys and Girls Club and the Breast Cancer Society. All the funds collected will go to these two groups. I’m sure people will be generous for these groups.”

“All the funds donated to fight cancer will stay in our local community,” Neal added.

The event will also run three competitions including 3-point shooting, dribbling, and free throws.

Awards will be given according to age group. Players can attempt any or all of competitions for $1 for each attempt in each category.

All the prizes will be donated and volunteers will work the event. Exercise science students will serve as the medical staff. Five of the 10 to 12 referees are needed have volunteered. Referees interested in helping can contact Neal as noted below.

A concession stand will be open during the tournament and bottled water has been donated to the event.

Registration forms can be picked up at the LSSU Box Office, Sault Area Schools, surrounding area schools — such as Pickford, Rudyard, Brimley and Cedarville — and many businesses in the Sault.
For more information contact Summers Captain at 440-9901 or R.J. Neal at 322-2413 or email him at rjneal1969@hotmail.com. Hoops For Hope can also be found on Facebook. Those interested in supporting this event with a donation can send checks to R.J. Neal, (put “Hoops For Hope” in the memo-line), P.O. Box 675, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783.

Help Hoops For Hope fight cancer and assist boys and girls.

When you do, we all win.

“Giving back is a privilege and I am fortunate enough to be in a position to do so,” the University at Albany alumnus said. “There is nothing like it and I really enjoy doing anything I can. This is going to be a great event and some great professional athletes are coming out to be a part of it.

“I am looking to expand the charity and may do a run or breast cancer awareness fundraiser, but this is my primary event,” Barksdale added, noting that he is finalizing another deal with Applebees in Hudson where fans who bring the event flier to the restaurant will have a portion of their bill donated to the foundation.

The Hudson native spent time playing with the Kansas City Chiefs, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals. He currently has a starting role with the Command in the Arena League.

Last season, Barksdale ranked second on the team in tackles with 81.5, even though he joined the team part of the way through the season.

Briggs Nissan Lawrence Helps Support Boys & Girls Club 3 on 3 Basketball …

Lawrence, Kansas (PRWEB) February 22, 2012

On Saturday February 25th the University of Kansas Sport Management and Marketing Club along with the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence will be putting on a 3 on 3 basketball tournament for first and second graders to participate in. Briggs Nissan Lawrence is one of the leading Nissan dealers in Lawrence and is very proud to be a part of this great event.

The tournament will be taking place at the Robinson Recreation Center on the University of Kansas campus. Briggs Nissan Lawrence is a huge fan of basketball and getting kids active. They are a large supporter of the Lawrence community and they are proud to help out with this tournament. Briggs Nissan Lawrence is joined by Briggs Subaru and Briggs Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in contributing to this event.

Zumbathon raises money for West Bank Boys & Girls Club

Grown-ups and kids alike shared in Zumbathon, a fun-filled event held at the Westbank Boys Girls Club, 900 10th St., Gretna. In an effort to help the club move forward after its reopening, Miriam Rosa, a kindergarten teacher at William Hart Elementary School in Gretna, organized the fundraiser.

12wcgretna1.jpg‘Dancing makes you feel alive and happy. Happiness is contagious. If Westbank Boys and Girls Club stays open another month longer because of a few donations through this event, or if they are able to raise funds for anything that they need, I will be happy,’ Miriam Rosa said of the Zumbathon she organized for the club. Rosa, pictured in the center leading the group, is a kindergarten teacher at William Hart Elementary.

All proceeds were designated to keep the after-school program alive.

“I saw the impact it (the Boys and Girls Club) had on my students who attended their after-school program last year,” Rosa said.

Rosa, who owns Inner City Dance, teaches Zumba in Metairie and Marrero. She led some of the classes at the event as did Claudia Schmitt, Zumbatomic instructor at the Metairie YMCA.

“Zumba fitness is all about having fun, feeling the music and getting a great workout without feeling like you are working out. It is for anyone and any age. It is for those who love to dance and those who think they can’t dance,” Rosa said.

There were arts and crafts, face-painting, food and T-shirts for sale, plus games for kids.

You can help the club’s after-school program by signing up for the first Westbank Boys Girls Club 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament presented by Amerigroup Louisiana on Jan. 21.

Up to 12 teams in each age bracket will be allowed, so register now at the club or call 504.368.3434 for more information.

Registration per team is $30.

Information about the plight of the Boys Girls Club has spread around the community. Officers of the St. Joseph Women’s Club recently visited the club and toured the facility that houses an awesome amount of equipment donated to it by the New Orleans Saints.

The women presented a check for $575 to club Director Michael Grodsky. Women’s Club members contributed to the kids rather than exchange gifts within the membership during the holiday season.
