Rose Bigelow B-Ball Tourney Returns Saturday
There’s still time to assemble a team and compete in the annual Rose Bigelow 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, which returns to the Great Valley High School gymnasium Saturday. Registrations are taken right up until the 8:30 a.m. tip-off, and last year’s event drew more than 300 people.
The tournament was created in 2005 in memory of an East Whiteland woman who died unexpectedly the previous year. Rose Bigelow worked as a teacher’s aide in the Great Valley School District and her three children attended district schools. Most of the money raised through the tournament goes to scholarship funds for local students in her honor.
“She was a great lady, and it’s a very happy day, always, to celebrate what a great person she was,” said Rose’s husband, Ken Bigelow.
In October 2004, Ken and his wife were enjoying their 20th wedding anniversary in Bermuda—a return to their honeymoon destination—when Rose died in a moped accident. She was 50 years old.
Ken credits Rose’s friends—Steve and Gaye Jablonski, Robin Young, Bettye Byrne, Kim Knaff, Brooke Nicklas, and Tom and Lisa Nackers—with first coming up with the idea for the tournament in early 2005, and doing the work to make it a reality.
The money raised by registration fees pays for two $1,500 scholarships for Great Valley High School graduating seniors, although the most recent tournament was successful enough for three scholarships to be awarded. Some funds also go to the junior class after prom and Great Valley Basketball League.
According to Ken, Rose was working with first-graders at K.D. Markley at the time of her death. He plans to continue the tournament and scholarship program until those students graduate in 2016.
Games in the 3-on-3 tournament are played on a half-court, and registration costs $20 per player, or $15 for students. Many teams are comprised of four players, as winning squads can expect to play a full day of basketball and benefit from a rotation. For more information, see the tournament flyer attached to this article.
Durham Wildcats ask companies to support coaching drive
Durham Wildcats ask companies to support coaching drive
10:42am Tuesday 28th February 2012 in North-East Business News
By Andy Richardson
BUSINESSES have an opportunity to help develop the next generation of North-East sports stars following the launch of an innovative sponsorship campaign.
Durham Wildcats basketball club, with the backing of Durham County Council, is hoping to raise £10,000 to support the development of the British Basketball League (BBL) newcomers.
The aim is for 20 local companies to each invest £500 in the club and in exchange the Wildcats have pledged to introduce 10,000 local schoolchildren to the sport.
Business backers will be invited to nominate the school of their choice to receive elite coaching sessions from the Wildcats team. Furthermore, the company would become match sponsor at an upcoming
BBL fixture at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre.
Councillor Neil Foster, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, said: “This is a very exciting opportunity to see businesses in County Durham help, support and
foster excellence in schools while obviously raising their own profile at the same time.
“The Wildcats offer us as a county the chance to showcase home grown talent on a world stage and closer to home they have pledged to support pathways to excellence. I am delighted to support their
campaign.”
The Wildcats coach Dave Elderkin, explained how the youngsters would benefit from the programme. “Without exception all the pupils enjoy learning the skills and work very hard to master the game,”
he said.
“They really love working with the senior Wildcats players. We concentrate on teaching passing, shooting and dribbling skills and introduce 3 on 3 basketball, making it as much fun as possible.
“We also put together festivals for schools within their clusters and offer youngsters opportunities to play in front of a live audience before our own competitive Wildcat BBL games.”
The Wildcats have faced tough competition since making the step up to the top level of English basketball this season, but the move has significantly boosted the clubs profile; attracting crowds of
about 500 spectators and upping media coverage.
The Wildcats recent encounter with Mersey Tigers is being broadcast in full Tuesday February 28 at 8.00pm on Sky Sports 3.
Companies interested in backing the club should contact Richard Warburton, Wildcats operations manger on 0191 334 4737 or email richard.warburton@durham.ac.uk for more details.
