The Golden State Warriors have signed-on as a presenting sponsor for So You Think You Can Hoop, the Bay Area’s premier outdoor 3-on-3 basketball competition and basketball festival, which is slated to take place from July 7-8 at Oracle Arena, the team announced today.
So You Think You Can Hoop, which was founded by Oakland City Council Member Desley Brooks in conjunction with Goodwin Sports Management, is an outdoor basketball competition in which teams of three compete against one another in a double elimination style tournament. In addition to the fast-paced and competitive 3-on-3 games, the basketball festival will also include slam dunk contests, three-point shootouts and the Comcast SportsNet Family Fun Zone, featuring the SportsCaster Experience, bounce houses, face painting, youth basketball clinics, dance clinics from the Warrior Girls, performances by the Flying Dubs dunk team and much more.
“The Warriors are proud to be a presenting sponsor of this great event that is taking place right in our backyard at Oracle Arena,” said Warriors President Rick Welts. “As the Bay Area’s NBA team, a community tournament and basketball-themed festival is a natural fit for us and we look forward to being a big part of this event for years to come.”

Bellingen Public Feels ‘The Vibe’
A group of 17 students from Bellingen Public School participated in ’The Vibe’ Indigenous Cultural and Sports Day last Friday in Coffs Harbour. Students rotated around a variety of workshops including dance, hip-hop, art and health and also participated in a 3 on 3 basketball competition.
At the hip-hop workshop the students were lucky enough to write songs with current Cronulla Sharks player Albert Kelly. Throughout the day the students enthusiastically moved around the different workshops, learning new skills and valuable life lessons.
In the basketball competition our school displayed great sportsmanship and embraced the emphasis on fair play and socialising. The ‘Bellingen B-Boys’ were lucky enough to win their competition and Jazz Brightwell entered the break dancing competition impressing everyone with her moves.
This was the first year Bellingen Public School had entered a team in this event. Even though everyone was exhausted from all the physical activity the students and teachers are already looking forward to entering next year’s event.
New locale could boost Hoop It Up event – Omaha World
Published Wednesday January 25, 2012
Hoop It Up Omaha could take off like a rocket on the Fourth of July with its new location and new time, Regional Event Director Dona Smith said Wednesday.
The 3-on-3 basketball competition is moving from downtown Omaha to the Werner Park parking lot and from the month of May to the weekend of July 7 and 8.
“I think this is going to make a world of difference,” Smith said.
Participants will no longer have to pay for parking, and the close proximity to Interstate 80 could attract teams from Lincoln and beyond. The event also will no longer go head-to-head with high school state tournaments and graduation events.
Smith is hoping that the number of teams will spike from about 230 to around 400.
“I can definitely see it growing that much,” she said.
Registration fees for teams of five start at $100 for the youth division and go up to $150 for the Top Gun division. Hoop It Up Omaha is offering teams $20 off for pre-registration between now and Feb. 8.
Smith said there is no limit on the variety of divisions, as long as there are four teams in each. That means co-ed teams, over-50 teams, you name it.
“Anybody who wants to play, I want them to be able to play,” she said.
Besides 3-on-3 basketball, the two-day event will feature 3-point, dunk and free-throw contests.
Smith, who has coached in the youth and high school ranks, has been in charge of the event since it returned to Omaha seven years ago. She also does events in Louisville, Ky., and Indianapolis.
This year, she’s hoping for her best event ever in memory of her son Steve, who died in November at age 31. He played in the event, worked on the road crew and ran the scoreboard. They also coached together.
“He was my right-hand guy,” she said.
The family aspect is one reason she likes the new dates. Families could take vacation time and form a team.
“I love Hoop It Up, and the community really needs Hoop It Up,” Smith said. “It needs more people to come together in a positive atmosphere.”

Kendal and first-time finalists Allied Strikers will contest tomorrow’s final of the Brumalia House/Locker Room-sponsored Manchester Knock-out competition at the Kirkvine Sports Club.
Both teams reached the final in contrasting style. Kendal have exhibited consistent form in the earlier rounds but it took penalty kicks for them to get past Super League campaigners and former champions New Green in the semi-finals.
Allied reached the final after they were handed a lifeline when defending champions Downs were thrown out after it was revealed they had used ineligible players during their earlier wins over Porus and Allied Strikers. Hence, the Manchester FA decided to bring back both Allied and Porus. The two were pitted in a play-off encounter which Allied won 2-0. Allied then contested the semi-finals against Comfort at the Porus Community Centre and won 3-2.
Mt St Joseph became the first champions of the inaugural Manchester FA/Howie Chin Prep School league, following an emphatic 3-0 win over Belair in the final played at Brooks Park earlier this week.
The win by Mt St Joseph was not unexpected as they entered the final on a high after closing out the preliminary round, defeating Emmanuel 5-0. It was also their second win over Belair during the championship.
Following the Manchester FA president Dalton Wint revealed there would be significant changes to the competition next year, including prize money and an increase in the number of teams. Of paramount importance this year, he said, was the need to just start a competition within the 8-11 age group among the parish’s preparatory schools.
The Manchester Rifle and Pistol Club (MRPC) will host the last of its public shooting tournaments for 2011, aptly titled ‘Christmas Rappa-Pam-Pam’, tomorrow.

Exercise enthusiasts can test their endurance tomorrow morning at a unique fundraiser today at Wolmer’s Girls School. This special event is an aerobics burn-out competition, at the school’s Cavaliers field starting at 8 a.m. Entries will be accepted until 7:15 a.m. on the morning of the competition.
Staged to raise funds for the 2012 Penn Relays and the building of a science lab at the school, the competition is a continuous aerobics endurance test with the top spot going to the last man, or woman standing.
Last year, Wolmer’s finished a close second in the Championship of America 4×100 metre final for girls at the Penn Relays in the United States. That team included young talents Shauna Helps and Jonelle Smith who had earlier won gold medals in the Girls Championships Class Three 100 and 200 metres respectively.
The school team is coached by Michael Kerr whose graduates include Olympic 100 champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
Organising committee representative Cherine Richards has appealed to fitness enthusiasts and sponsors to come on board.
“The girls are revved up to follow in Shelly-Ann’s footsteps and to continue the Wolmer’s tradition of quality performances,” she said. “This event is designed to get them the help they need.”

Jumping YBs thrill the crowd with slam dunk
KUALA LUMPUR: Four politicians scored a slam dunk, proving in full public view that YBs could indeed jump.
And they did it not once or twice but three times as they played three exhibition matches at a 3-on-3 basketball competition yesterday, aptly dubbed “YBs Can Jump”.
Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Gan Ping Sieu and Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan did not disappoint the crowd gathered at Berjaya Times Square.
They made slick passes and sank some hoops as they took on some serious competition head-on.
Even if they only managed to draw their first match with Team TJ and lost their two following matches to Malaysiakini and competition champions Twitterjaya 1, the crowd clearly had a good time cheering on the YBs and their opponents.
Spectators and players also gave extra applause to Saifuddin who, despite fracturing a bone in his leg last week, made good on his promise to shoot and, in a few cases, nailing some hoops.
Khairy described the competition as a “spontaneous” event that started with a series of tweets among the four politicians to arrange a friendly round of basketball, and that it simply grew from there.
“Just from Twitter, we managed to organise this competition and attract 32 multi-racial teams in just one week. There’s no protocol, no officiating speeches, no ribbon-cutting. It’s a great way to promote unity,” he said.
Gan agreed that the competition was a successful model for using sports as an “instrument to unite the people”, pointing out that beyond the fun, the event showed that it appealed to all.
Kamalanathan said they would work on promoting similar events in future.
“We’re going to go beyond YBs Can Jump. Maybe we will also do YBs Can Futsal, YBs can Flick Hockey, YBs Can Bowl. Sports is a great way to raise the spirit of patriotism,” he said.
Change is imminent
MAKE THAT CHANGE: (From left) Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan, Saifuddin, Ping Sieu and Khairy at the YB’s Can Jump launch
PETALING JAYA: The National Sports Council (NSC) Act 1971 will undergo several amendments to ensure it remains relevant to the national sports scene.
Deputy Sports Minister Gan Ping Sieu added various factors were taken into consideration, including the report compiled by the University of Sterling on the role of National Sports Association (NSAs) in developing the national sports industry.
“We will look into revamping the NSC. Even the National Sports Institute’s bill was passed in Parliament recently allowing them to work independently,” said Ping Sieu.
“The same amendments will be done with NSC to ensure it remains relevant in a bid to complement the sports industry.”
The report titled Developing The Malaysian Sport Industry; Developing the capacity of NSAs, compiled by Prof Leigh Robinson and Brian Minikin, is an analysis on NSAs carried out using the Readiness Assessment Tool.
This was highlighted in From the Sidelines column First class joke published yesterday.
The report indicated NSC interferes with the management of NSAs in the country, adding; “…in some cases, it has been reported the NSC-funded administrative officer reports primarily back to NSC rather than the board of governors of the NSA.
“If this is the case, it undermines the governance and management of an NSA and will inhibit development of the organisation… A significant number of NSAs reported their operational procedures were directed either by a strong president who determined how everything was to be done or that this was imposed upon them by NSC and tied to funding”.
Peng Sieu was met during the launch of the “YBs Can Jump” 3-on-3 basketball competition at Maba Stadium yesterday.
Also present were Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Umno youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan.
The tournament, which went viral on Twitter, will see the participation of 32 teams. It will be held at Berjaya Times Square on Nov 19.
Local Senior Games standouts speak out
Have game will travel.
It doesn’t matter that you may have lost a step or that the
energy level isn’t quite what it used to be.
For a pair of Utah County residents, just competing after the
age of 80 is a reason to celebrate.
Consider the alternatives.
Each year the Huntsman Senior Games attract athletes from all
over the world including many from Utah Valley, who believe that
competition is a state of mind that is not to be disqualified by a
birth certificate.
For Spanish Fork’s Lyle Timmons, this year’s 25th anniversary of
the Huntsman Senior Games marked his fifth appearance at the
games.
He’s getting better every year.
Last year he won two gold medals. This year he turned 81 and won
two gold medals, two silver and two bronce. He competed in a six
events during his 10-day stay in St. George.
Timmons, a walk-on college basketball player and former semi-pro
baseball player, still has plenty of game. He won gold medals in
3-on-3 basketball and 3-point/free throw shooting. He won silver
medals in the Hot Shot basketball competition (shooting from
different spots on the court) and in horseshoes. He took home
hardware in softball and 4-on-4 basketball, netting a pair of
bronze medals.
He competed in so many events that juggling the times may have
been his most difficult feat. He left his basketball game at half
time to get to his softball game.
It was a good thing he left because he stepped up and delivered
the game-winning hit in the last inning to help his team advance to
the medal round.
It was just one of many highlights.
Another moment to remember was his silver-medal performance in
the horseshoes, where he knocked off an opponent (42-13) who was a
national champion and was undefeated in the Senior Games.
“I had never pitched horseshoes in competition before, so that
was probably the biggest highlight,” Timmons said. “I’d also never
got a medal in softball before, so to get to the medal round was
pretty exciting. I just enjoy playing ball. The fact that I’m still
able to play feels good.”
Don’t tell Jerry Park she is too old to wear a little
bling-bling.
You are never too old to wear some gold or sliver.
Park is 88 and still looks good in gold.
She won three gold medals in the golf competition. Park is one
of the the original members of Riverside County Club and can be
found teeing off at Riverside a few times a week to keep her game
sharp.
She won the 80-and-over division in golf at the Senior Games.
She also took home a silver medal for the Longest Drive and bronze
medal for the Closest to the Hole.
“It’s a lot of fun. You meet a lot of people from all over the
world who come to compete,” Park said. “The people are very nice to
you, I think it’s a great event.”
Park has a name in the sports community. Her husband, Russell
Park, started Parks Sportsman in Orem.
“I’m in pretty good health. I’ve had no major problems,” Park
said. “I just like to stay active and try to go out and do my
best.”
