For more information or to volunteer, please contact Anne at New Bedford Community Rowing at 508-717-4013 or anne@newbedfordcommunityrowing.org.

3-On-3 series is a hit
More non-Chinese attracted to the game

THE five-leg 3-On-3 Basketball Street Challenge ended recently with a resounding success.
Organised by the Penang Basketball Association, the event achieved its goal of boosting the development of the sport in the state.
Penang Basketball Association (PBA) president Ooi Khoon Yeong said the 3-On-3 series fulfilled the association’s aim of attracting more non-Chinese to the game.
“We are happy that this tournament, with the assistance of many sponsors, has attracted some Malay and Indian players to participate,” he said.
“It has also helped in the development of basketball in Penang, especially in the age-group categories as we saw keen competition between the players.
“We are eager to continue with the series so that we can have a pool of good players for the state and the country.”
Khoon Yeong pointed out that there was no team dominating all the five legs, except for SMJK (C) Chung Ling’s entry, Just For Fun 2, who won back-to-back Boys’ Under-18 titles and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) who took the Women Open title twice.
This showed that the series was an equal playing field.
He said about 250 teams, mostly in the age-group categories, participated in each of the five legs.
There were about 750 basketball players at each leg, a good sign for the development of the sport.
Just For Fun 2, representing Chung Ling School, missed the first two legs but were hopeful in the third leg.
However, they could only finish third after losing in the semi-finals to their peers, Just For Fun.
But in their second attempt, Just For Fun 2 mesmerised the local basketball enthusiasts to capture the title.
They vowed that they would be back for the title, which they did in the fifth and last leg at the car park of the Penang Skills Development Centre in Bayan Lepas recently.
Just For Fun 2 knocked out their peers, Just For Fun, in the final and became the only team to win back-to-back titles.
The Boys’ Under-18 final was heading for a draw and the organisers were preparing for sudden-death shoot-out, when just before the final buzzer in extra time, a lannky Just For Fun 2 player scored with a long shot for an 11-10 victory.
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) clinched the Women’s Open title after thrashing defending champions AMFI ‘A’ 10-1.
The USM girls won the first leg but failed to participate in the next three legs.
However, they came back with a bang for the fifth and final leg.
Other attractions at the event were the men’s and women’s “shooting” and “slam dunk” contests.
The players also participated in a lucky draw which offered prizes like an 32′ LCD television set, two B-Suite Room Vouchers, three vouchers, worth RM300 each, for Nike shoes, 10 pairs of Pallas shoes, 10 Kaffa cash vouchers, three Sony Ericsson mobile phones and three Molten GE7 basketball.
Also involved in the organising of the 3-On-3 tournament were Sports Pro Marketing Sdn. Bhd, Sunrise Paper Sdn Bhd, Penang Skills Development Centre, Penang Youth and Sports Department and State Sports Council Hotlink, OCBC Bank, Pallas, Isonic and B-suite Hotel were the partnership sponsors while100Plus was the official drink sponsor, with Auto City, Juru and Straits Quay Seri Tanjung, Penang as the venue sponsor.

A Cabinet ‘Slam Dunk’ In Basketball Tournament On Nov 9

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 (Bernama) — Come Wednesday, the finals of the HSB-KLBA Basketball Championship will be unlike any other, going by the history of Malaysian basketball.
It will be a ‘slam dunk’ of the kind which could only be dished out by members of the Malaysian Cabinet.
For the first time, four members of parliament (MP), including two deputy ministers, will square off at the championship held at the Malaysian Basketball Association (Maba) Stadium in Jalan Hang Jebat here.
The ‘thrilla’ begins at 7.30pm.
In a joint statement today, Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Gan Ping Sieu, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan said the event was a prelude or ‘warm-up’ to the #YBsCanJump Basketball Tournament to be held on Nov 19.
They said the championship which was launched on Oct 9 by Saifuddin, was aimed at promoting basketball at the grassroots-level and across ethnic lines.
“We will be playing with and against several national players, as well as Maba office-bearers during half-time of the finals,” they added.
The young political leaders also said the #YBsCanJump was originated from Twitter, where they first mooted the idea of a 3-on-3 basketball match.
“Some of our Twitter followers then expressed interest in participating (in the event) after which, we came up with what is now known as the #YBsCanJump Tournament,” they said.
The tournament is open to the public.

Cash prizes will depend on the number of teams. For four teams, the champion will receive $100, for six and eight, cash prizes will be $150 and $200, respectively. For 10 or more teams, the winner will pocket $250.
Meanwhile, Lee would like to thank NTT Docomo Pacific and Tan Siu Lin Foundation for supporting the competition.
“This year UBA is honored to once again have NTT Docomo Pacific as the main sponsor for the annual 3-on-3 tournament. Docomo was the main sponsor of the past two 3-on-3 tournaments and UBA is very grateful for their continued support to our organization. Aside from our main sponsor, Docomo Pacific, we would also like to recognize our other sponsor, Tan Siu Lin Foundation,” Lee said.
To register or for more information, contact Lee at 483-0290 or email at unifiedbasketballassociation@gmail.com.
