Nick Shoff, an RHS senior varsity basketball player, began JamQuest Hoops as a service project in the eighth grade with the support of East Ridge Middle School social studies teacher Maureen Tyra. Recently, NBA Global Ambassador Dikembe Mutombo and San Diego Chargers All-Pro quarterback Philip Rivers each personally contacted Shoff to offer their recognition and support.
The JamQuest Executive Team is comprised of RHS senior student athletes, including Ryan Callanan, Allie Schiffer, John Turner, Nicole Rioseco, Sarah Kadagian, Grayson Wiley, and Shoff. In March they talked to several hundred students at both East Ridge and Scotts Ridge in a program entitled Everyone Can Be Great Because Everyone Can Serve.
Over the last four years, more than $18,000 has been raised through donations and entry fees, and more than 500 participants have played in the tournament. For the third consecutive year, Dr. Mark Ottenweller, an international crisis medical worker and global AIDS coordinator for HOPE worldwide, will be speaking at the event.

Remembering Ella Rose Solak
The Final Four isn’t the only basketball tournament people were cheering for Saturday.
Plenty of people packed the gymnasium at Lowellville High School for a special tournament Saturday, but this isn’t your typical tournament; points don’t matter.
“It’s just kind of indescribable when you walk into this place and see all these people here with all their t-shirts on, just kind of honoring her memory,” said Gina Solak.
Gina Solak’s daughter, Ella Rose Solak, was born with Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. The baby underwent multiple procedures, including three open heart surgeries. On March 23, 2010, just four months shy of her second birthday, she passed away.
Following her death, students at Lowellville High School organized a basketball tournament to help the Solak’s with medical bills. Ivan Solak, Ella Rose’s, dad is math teacher at the school. Three years later, the Have a Heart Ella Rose Solak 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament continues.
“We’re getting 50 teams a year,” said Ivan Solak.
Gia Amendola and a few of her classmates organized the tournament this year. They have been planning the event since September.
“We make the brackets, it takes a long time to make all the brackets,” said Gia Amendola, tournament organizer. “We have five age divisions, and boys and girls.”
The event is service learning project Lisa Iberis’ Advanced Academic American Literature Class. The teacher is beyond proud of her students.
“They’re the ones who are writing sponsor letters. They are the ones who are asking for donations,” said Iberis. “They are the ones who are going to the council meetings asking for approval.”
For Amendola, the tournament is personal. Ella Rose was her cousin.
“I do take it very seriously, and I know that it makes them proud and it makes the whole community proud,” said Amendola.
“It’s hard to describe because it means the world,” said Gina Solak. “You know, I just can’t think of a better way to honor her memory, to keep her memory alive.”
Proceeds from the tournament go to the Ella Rose Solak Memorial Scholarship fund. The money will be awarded to a graduating Lowellville senior.
The Solak’s said they are extremely thankful to the students and parents who make the event possible, and hope it continues.

Fitness Expo in Abilene adds 3-on-3 basketball tournament
A 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be added to this year’s activities at the West Texas Sports and Fitness Expo, Feb. 4, at the Abilene Civic Center.
Teams, either male or female, can sign up for $75 per team for one of three age divisions — youth (12 and under), high school (16 and under) and open (any age). The open division will also offer coed competition.
The top two teams in each division will receive awards, and each division winner will receive T-shirts.
Teams have until Tuesday to register for the tournament.
Jon Smith, executive director of Abilene Youth Sports Authority, which is organizing the Expo, said at least one team from Austin has called to ask about the event.
This will be the seventh year for the Expo, he said.
“It’s a great family activity here in Abilene — something that’s indoors, where parents, grandparents and kids can be together and have fun,” Smith said. “It’s a lot of entertainment for families.”
Besides the tournament, other activities will include a virtual golf long-drive competition; a quarterback shootout (football throw); fast-pitch; and soccer and hockey shootouts. Athletes from high school to the Abilene Ruff Riders indoor football team will be available for autographs throughout the day.
“We’re excited to be out there,” said Joe Brannen, Ruff Riders coach. “A big thing for us, our ownership group and organization is that our players are out in the community. We want guys that are striving to be winners both on the field and out in the community.
“We’ll have four to six guys out there signing autographs and interacting with the fans.”
The event also serves as a kickoff for children to register for spring sports with AYSA.
A number of vendors featuring health and nutrition, sports leagues, sports information and sponsors will be on site throughout the day.
Doors open at 9 a.m., with events scheduled through 5 p.m. Cost is $2 per person. Children under 12 admitted for $1.
For more information or schedule of events, check at www.wtxsports-expo.com, or contact AYSA at 325-692-2972.
