The 2012 Texas State Senior Games in San Antonio, which ran from March 17 though April 1, allowed senior citizen athletes to compete and qualify for the 2013 National Senior Games. The Senior Games is one of the largest athletic competitions around the world with over 20 different sports played by athletes who are 50 years old and over. 3 on 3 tourney to fund mission trip

Area hoopsters will compete May 5 to raise money to help children with life-threatening illnesses.

Nine youth from Brandon and Split Rock Lutheran churches are planning the 3-on-3 basketball tournament to fund a mission trip to Give Kids the World Village in Orlando, Fla. They hope the tournament raises half of the $10,000 they need to send nine youth and two chaperones to the 70-acre, nonprofit resort in July.

Nate Winter, a junior, said the group will work on the Give Kids the World Village campus, operating rides, serving ice cream and accompanying kids to activities.

Teams that sign up for the 3-on-3 tournament are guaranteed three games. Games will be played in the Brandon Lutheran Church parking lot, with the Brandon Valley Middle School gym as the rain location.

In addition to the 3-on-3 tournament May 5, the youth group will sponsor a morning dance camp with the Skyleaders, the dance squad for the Sioux Falls Skyforce. The camp is for children in grades kindergarten through eight.

Campers will learn a dance routine and make hairpieces. They will perform their routine at the intermission of the 3-on-3 tournament.

The day also will include a silent auction and concessions.

Lisa Smith, Brandon Lutheran youth coordinator, said the planning group appreciates the help of the Skyforce, Brandon, Sanford, Thrivent and others who have helped the mission group put together the fundraiser day.

Brandon Lutheran youth group members put in volunteer hours regularly. They recently colored Easter eggs and played Bingo with Bethany Meadows residents, and they cleaned one of several gardens on the campus.

“It feels nice to give back to the community,” freshman Emma Baier said. Her grandfather is in a nursing home in Iowa. “I would want people to do that for him.”

Spencer Smith, Lisa’s son, said he gains satisfaction from volunteering, for “the thought of making someone’s day or even their life better.”

The kids have served meals to the homeless at The Banquet in Sioux Falls, and last fall they raked people’s yards. They have made fleece blankets for Dougherty Hospice House and plan to work on more gardens at Bethany Meadows.

The youth are always looking for new ways to help. “These kids are an awesome group of kids,” Lisa Smith said. “When I give them an idea, they run with it. They are not afraid to work. They are not afraid to help.”

The nine kids going to Give Kids the World Village are Hannah Murray, Winter, Baier, Allie Poppenga, Erik Ode, Spencer Smith, Dillon Waldera, Jordyn Griffith and Rachael Horner. They are looking forward to helping children with life-threatening illnesses, and their families, have a dream vacation.

They will put in 40 hours of volunteer time helping children with a trick-or-treat day and a birthday party day.

They also will have some free time while they are in Florida. They will visit Disney World, the beach and a baseball game.

Winter said the youth group has been wanting to do a mission trip for several years. While they talked about going to another country, “this trip (within the United States) seemed like the most cost effective way,” he said.

Bike accident victim’s condition improves

SEABROOK — There’s a bit of good news for the 16-year-old Winnacunnet High School student injured Thursday when he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bike on Route 1.

“Thank God,” said Matthew Denis’ uncle, Chad Kimball, yesterday.

The condition of the Seabrook teen was grim Friday, one day after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Route 1 in the area of Lake Shore Drive on his bicycle. His family said he was riding his bike to visit his grandmother. He was not wearing a helmet.

After the crash on Thursday afternoon, Denis was flown by helicopter from Exeter Hospital to Boston Children’s Hospital.

Denis isn’t out of the woods yet.

“He’s doing OK,” Kimball said. “He’s still unconscious, but somehow he’s moving himself around. He hasn’t opened his eyes.” Denis is also breathing on his own.

Police have not charged the driver involved in the crash and have not said if they plan to do so.

According to a press release, the unidentified 29-year-old Hampton Falls, N.H., woman driving the vehicle told police “there was no time to react to the bicyclist.”

Witnesses told police the victim crossed five lanes before being struck in the far right southbound lane.

Family and friends continue to raise money for his parents and Denis, who will face a long road to recovery.

A fund was set up for them, and friends are selling bracelets.

A family member, Richard Janvrin, is selling bracelets for $4 each that say, “We Support Matt. A True Warrior” on them. He’s also planning a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Sunday at Tuck Field.

All the proceeds go to benefit the Denis family and pay for medical expenses.

“As soon as I heard the news, I felt this is something I got to do,” Janvrin said. “I want to help out.”

Janvrin can be reached at 603-997-7187.

There will be three age divisions, with each featuring boys and girls brackets. The 5th-8th grade division will play from 6 to 7:30, the 9th-12th grade division from 8 to 9:30, and the 18-over division from 10 to 11.

Nick Shoff, an RHS senior varsity basketball player, began JamQuest Hoops as a service project in the eighth grade with the support of East Ridge Middle School social studies teacher Maureen Tyra. Recently, NBA Global Ambassador Dikembe Mutombo and San Diego Chargers All-Pro quarterback Philip Rivers each personally contacted Shoff to offer their recognition and support.

The JamQuest Executive Team is comprised of RHS senior student athletes, including Ryan Callanan, Allie Schiffer, John Turner, Nicole Rioseco, Sarah Kadagian, Grayson Wiley, and Shoff. In March they talked to several hundred students at both East Ridge and Scotts Ridge in a program entitled Everyone Can Be Great Because Everyone Can Serve.

Over the last four years, more than $18,000 has been raised through donations and entry fees, and more than 500 participants have played in the tournament. For the third consecutive year, Dr. Mark Ottenweller, an international crisis medical worker and global AIDS coordinator for HOPE worldwide, will be speaking at the event.

Those wishing to donate should visit JamQuestHoops.com.

Shooting Stars – Las Cruces Sun

Click photo to enlargeBlue skies and long-range shooting accuracy returned Sunday and the Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament crowned champions in 35 brackets as the event concluded at the Field of Dreams.

A cool, sunny and breezy finale was a welcome sight to estimated 2,000 players lacing up their shoes for the annual event. The Gus Macker opened Saturday, accompanied by high winds, which whipped up dust and shrouded the tournament in a cloud of brown – not exactly ideal conditions for any shooters out there.

Sunday’s 63-degree high and comparatively light winds proved more friendly.

Stopping in Las Cruces since 1995, the Gus Macker typically benefits local nonprofit organizations, and this year was no different.

The Las Cruces Boys and Girls Club and Casa de Peregrinoswere the two organizations benefitting from proceeds of the tournament.

Las Cruces was the first stop on the Gus Macker’s 2012 schedule, according to the organization’s website. It will run tournaments in three other New Mexico cities – Alamogordo, Artesia and Hobbs – through the spring and summer.
